An elegant antique sterling silver butter spreader by the renowned Whiting Manufacturing Company, crafted in the richly ornamented Louis XV pattern introduced in 1891.
 
The solid sterling silver spreader features an elaborate Rococo Revival design of graceful scrolling foliage and shell-inspired details extending along both sides of the handle. The broad, gently curved blade is balanced by the beautifully sculpted handle, giving the piece a substantial and luxurious feel in the hand.
 
Measuring approximately 6 inches long and weighing 28 grams, this is the large flat-handle butter spreader from the Louis XV flatware service. The reverse is marked STERLING 925 along with the Whiting maker's mark.
