1876 Victorian 15ct Gold Amethyst & Pearl Ring · Birmingham

A remarkable Victorian 15ct gold ring, fully hallmarked for Birmingham, 1876, featuring a deep purple amethyst carved with a distinctive star motif.
 
At the centre is a square cushion-shaped amethyst with a recessed star carved into the face of the stone. The amethyst has been gemstone tested and displays a rich plum-purple colour. It is surrounded by creamy seed pearls and small faceted green gemstones, arranged within an intricate gold cluster setting with delicate bead and open scrollwork details.
 
The goldwork is particularly beautiful. Both shoulders are extensively hand engraved with scrolling foliate decoration, with the engraving continuing around much of the band. Despite being approximately 150 years old, a considerable amount of this fine detail remains visible.
 
The interior carries the historic British 15 and .625 gold marks, along with the Birmingham assay mark and date letter corresponding to 1876. Fifteen-carat gold was a British gold standard used during the 19th and early 20th centuries and contains 62.5% pure gold.
 
A wonderfully detailed piece of Victorian jewellery combining an unusual carved amethyst, seed pearls, colourful gemstone accents and exceptionally decorative goldwork.
