Antique Chinese Kingfisher Feather Fish Pendant · Tian-Tsui · Silver Gilt

An exceptional antique Chinese articulated fish pendant decorated with genuine kingfisher feather, an historic decorative technique commonly known today as tian-tsui.
 
The fish is constructed in multiple articulated sections, allowing the body to flex and move naturally. Each overlapping scale-like section is edged in finely detailed gilt metal and inset with brilliant turquoise-blue kingfisher feather. The head and forked tail are also feather decorated, with a tiny coral-coloured accent forming the eye.
 
The incredibly vivid blue is not enamel—the colour comes from the microscopic structure of the kingfisher feathers themselves, creating the intense turquoise and blue appearance for which this traditional Chinese work is prized.
 
The metal has been identified as silver gilt, with an aged gold-toned surface consistent with the piece's age. At just 2 grams, the pendant is remarkably intricate and delicate.
 
There is visible age and wear to the feather decoration, particularly around portions of the head and tail, which I would leave exactly as it is. The surviving feather remains beautifully vibrant.
