Vintage Birks Sterling Silver Locket · Engraved Floral Oval Pendant

A beautifully substantial vintage sterling silver locket by Birks, featuring an ornate hand-engraved floral and scrolling design across the front. The deeply detailed decoration has a wonderful old-world character, enhanced by the naturally aged silver patina.
 
A lovely older Birks sterling silver locket, believed to date to the mid-20th century. The personal inscription on the reverse was added later, in 1993, when the vintage locket was given to “Erin” by Papa & Nana.
 
Rather than detracting from the piece, the engraving gives this locket a genuine history and makes it particularly appealing as a sentimental vintage keepsake. The reverse is also stamped STERLING with the Birks maker's mark.
 
The locket opens to reveal two oval compartments ready for photographs or other small mementos. It has a decorative scrolled bail at the top and a pleasing weight at 15.2 grams.
 
The silver has developed a rich, dark patina over time. It has intentionally been left unpolished so its next caretaker can choose whether to preserve the aged finish or polish it to reveal brighter sterling silver.
 
A lovely Canadian vintage piece from one of the country's best-known jewellers, with both decorative beauty and a personal story from its previous life.
