Antique Garnet Dragonfly Pendant · Silver Gilt Converted Brooch
A wonderfully characterful antique dragonfly, set throughout with rich red garnets and crafted in silver gilt. Originally made as a brooch, the piece has since been thoughtfully converted into a pendant, giving an older jewel a new and very wearable life.
The dragonfly is beautifully detailed, with garnets graduating across its four outstretched wings and continuing down the articulated-looking body. Larger faceted stones form the centre of the body, while smaller garnets add flashes of deep crimson throughout. Tiny silver bead accents between the stones give the wings additional texture and definition.
The reverse reveals the traditional closed-back construction, while the original brooch fitting has been removed and a pendant bail added at the top. The gilt finish has mellowed with age, leaving areas of the underlying silver visible and giving the piece the wonderfully timeworn character expected of an antique jewel.
A distinctive little piece with plenty of presence despite its light 2.6 gram weight, and particularly lovely for anyone who collects antique insect jewellery.
