A beautiful antique 14K yellow gold brooch featuring a heart-shaped amethyst, seed pearls and a suspended oval amethyst drop.
 
The faceted heart-shaped amethyst forms the centre of the design, surrounded by delicate scrolling goldwork accented with small seed pearls. The heart-shaped amethyst forms the centre of the design, surrounded by graceful scrolling goldwork accented with creamy seed pearls. Suspended beneath is a second faceted amethyst in an oval cut, articulated from the main brooch so that it moves gently when worn.
 
The combination of purple amethyst, seed pearls, romantic scrolling goldwork and an articulated gemstone drop is characteristic of jewellery from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
 
The brooch appears to have had its original clasp replaced at some point with a later safety clasp, likely to make it more secure for wear. The replacement is visible on the reverse and is consistent with the practical alterations often made to antique brooches during their lifetime.
