Antique P.S. Co. Gold Filled Initial B Brooch · Edwardian Monogram Pin
An antique Edwardian-era monogram brooch by P.S. Co., Plainville Stock Company of Massachusetts, dating to approximately the early 1900s.
The brooch has an elaborate openwork design built around a central oval plaque hand engraved with a script “B.” Behind the monogram is a geometric woven or lattice-style section with fine textured detailing, while large symmetrical scrolls extend to either side. The pointed lower section and small bead terminals give the piece a distinctly turn-of-the-century appearance.
The construction appears to use several different gold components rather than being uniformly one material. Testing indicates the central engraved oval is approximately 9K gold. The woven decorative section tests as gold filled, while the prominent front scrollwork consistently tests as gold at the surface but does not test as gold from the reverse. This suggests a substantial applied gold layer or gold-front construction over a non-gold backing. Because the exact construction of these applied sections cannot be determined non-destructively, we have described the brooch conservatively as mixed gold and gold-filled construction.
The reverse is stamped P.S. Co., for Plainville Stock Company of Massachusetts. It retains its original-style long pin stem and C-style catch. There is age-related patina, surface wear and variation in the gold colour consistent with an antique piece.
